Raptor Center Volunteer Makes Eagle Scout

Sunday, January 18, 2009.  John A. (Johnny) May III, a volunteer at the Mid-South Raptor Center, recently obtained the rank of Eagle Scout at his Eagle Court of Honor at St. Louis Catholic Church in Memphis, TN.  Johnny's Eagle Scout project was the construction of two large raptor exercise cages on the grounds of the center.  He and his volunteer helpers did a great job, and the cages are already housing recovering birds of prey.

We at the Center are pleased to be associated with Johnny and wish him all the best as he continues his education at Christian Brothers High School in Memphis.

December 17, 2008.  Congratulations to our own David Hannon, DVM, who received notice today that he has passed his avian boards with the second highest score.  He can now officially call himself a Bird Specialist.  This is a significant achievement since there are only about 120 veterinarians worldwide that are board-certified in avian medicine by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners.  In Tennessee there are three others, but all of them are at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in Knoxville.  There are no avian diplomates in West Tennessee, Arkansas, or Mississippi!  Dr. Hannon is now qualified to work at a zoo, veterinary school, or referral practice.

November 7, 2008.  Mid-South Raptor Center was an exhibitor at the Shelby County's 12 Annual Farm Education Day for 5th Graders at the Agricenter in Memphis.  For a copy of the brochure, click here and allow plenty of time for download.
